SCOPE
eXtended Reality (XR) is an umbrella term that brings AR (Augmented Reality), VR (Virtual Reality) and MR (Mixed Reality) under one term. XR is expected to become a new killer application in the 5G era and it is predicted that there will be over 100 million XR users by 2025 and 1 billion by 2030. Within 3GPP, many XR use cases have been identified such as 3D messaging, immersive 6DoF, immersive online gaming, remote assistance, real-time 3D communication, online shopping, and holographic communication. A common feature of these XR applications is the Real-Time Broadband Communication (RTBC). For example, growing resolution and frame rate will increase the downlink rate from 50~100 Mbps to 0.5~1 Gbps, and for strong-interaction applications and cloud rendering, the latency will be lowered from 100 ms to 5~10 ms. Furthermore, holographic communication requires nearly 50~100 Gbps peak rate and ms-level latency.
Obviously, XR poses higher requirements of both capacity and latency on 5G networks and drives the evolution of 5G technologies. This workshop will mainly consider the air interface technologies which may help achieve the requirements for these XR applications. This workshop provides the opportunity for attendees from both academia and industry to exchange views on advanced XR technologies for 5G and beyond.
