12th International Workshop on Knowledge Representation for Health Care (KR4HC 2021)

Organized as One Full Day Workshop

Online (Porto, Portugal) - June 16th, 2021
In conjunction with the 19th International Conference
on Artificial Intelligence in Medicine

Web site: http://banzai-deim.urv.net/events/KR4HC-2021/

Introduction
Knowledge representation in health care is a productive area of theories, standards, models, systems and applications, with an active community of researchers and developers but which counts with none dedicated international specific event for this community to meet. Since 2009, the KR4HC workshop has been organized year after year (with exception of 2020 for the worldwide pandemic situation) with a great level of participation, excellent quality of the works presented, and top quality publications of the best selected papers as Springer LNCS series books.

As it was observed in the previous editions of KR4HC, we expect that this new twelfth edition of KR4HC could bring together part of the KR in medicine community to present and discuss new ideas and technology, as well as, serve as a chance to think about the progress of the field. Due to the growing interest of mixing machine learning and knowledge representation technologies to address new biomedical challenges, for the first time, KR4HC 2021 will also welcome quality works on the challenging combination of machine learning technology and KR systems.

History of the Workshop
The first KR4HC workshop , held in conjunction with the 12th Artificial Intelligence in Medicine conference (AIME’09), brought together members of two existing communities: the clinical guidelines and protocols community, who held a line of four workshops (European Workshop on Computerized Guidelines and Protocols CPG’2000 and CPG’2004; AI Techniques in Health Care: Evidence-based Guidelines and Protocols 2006; Computer-based Clinical Guidelines and Protocols 2008), and a related community who held a series of three workshops devoted to the formalization, organization, and deployment of procedural knowledge in health care (CBMS’07 Special Track on Machine Learning and Management of Health Care Procedural Knowledge 2007; From Medical Knowledge to Global Health Care 2007; Knowledge Management for Health Care Procedures 2008). Since then, other KR4HC workshops have been held KR4HC'10 and KR4HC'11 , in conjunction with the ECAI’10 and the AIME’11 conferences. In 2012, the Forth KR4HC workshop was organized in conjunction with ProHealth as part of the BPM’12 conference. We continuing the efforts that with a second Joint Workshop on Knowledge Representation for Health Care and Process-Oriented Information Systems in Health Care (KR4HC/ProHealth) in the 14th Artificial Intelligence in Medicine conference (AIME’13). In 2014, the Sixth KR4HC was organized together with the KR'14 conference within the Vienna Summer of Logic. In 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018, the workshop (KR4HC 2015, KR4HC 2016, KR4HC 2017, KR4HC 2018) joined again with the ProHealth workshop as part of different first level conferences such as AIME 2015, HER 2016/MIE 2016, AIME 2017, and IJCAI-ECAI 2018, that were respectively held in Pavia (Italy), Munich (Germany), Vienna (Austria), and Stochholm (Sweeden). In 2019, the eleventh KR4HC was hosted by the AIME 2019 conference in Poznan, Poland. In 2020, for the first time in twelve years, the workshop was not organized due to the world affectation for the Covid-19 pandemic. After one stop year, the twelveth KR4HC was reactivated together with the AIME 2021, online.

Planned Activities

The workshop is planned for a full-day. It will start with a quick round of introductions by presenters and participants. It will feature an invited talk as well as the presentations of selected long and short papers. A final session will be scheduled for general discussion on the continuation of the workshop and other common interests.

Intended Audience

The KR4HC workshop will deal with different facets of knowledge representation in health care and will give insights into the technological challenges, applications, and perspectives emerging in this context. With varied contents, we hope to present a lively and inspiring program for participants from academia, industry, and health care organizations.

Contributions

Original contributions are sought, regarding the development of theory, techniques, and use cases of Artificial Intelligence and Knowledge Representation in the area of health care, particularly connected to patient data, guidelines and medical processes. Due to the growing interest of mixing machine learning and knowledge representation technologies to address new biomedical challenges, for the first time, KR4HC 2021 will also welcome quality works on the challenging combination of machine learning technology and KR systems.

Papers are expected to have as main keyword someone in the keyword list provided. All papers are expected in one of the submission formats available. Submit paper at https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=kr4hc2021.

Submission Formats

There are two categories of paper submissions:
- Full research papers of 12 to 14 pages showing mature works.
- Short papers of 4 to 6 pages that are short research papers, position papers, problem analysis papers, or demonstration of implemented systems.

All accepted papers will be included in the workshop proceedings. After the workshop, the best long papers will be choosen for extension, and the extensions being included in a postproceedings book in the LNAI series of Springer. The publication of the postproceedings book will be only possible if a considerable number of excellent papers are submitted. Short papers won't be considered for publication in Springer LNAI, unless explicit invitation of the workshop organizers conditioned to the high quality of the paper.

All papers are expected in Springer LNCS style.
