Ten Years of Cognitive Radio: State of the Art and Perspectives
Call for Papers

A cognitive radio (CR) is a radio being able to behave somehow as a cognitive system, in other words in this specific context, having at least capabilities of observing, decision making, and adapting.

CR technologies, such as dynamic spectrum access (DSA), create huge opportunities for interesting research and development in a wide range of applications. Since 1999, CR received a lot of consideration especially for spectrum optimization. CR has been often reduced to this latest aspect, but CR could be envisaged in a more wide sense, depending on which types of sensors that are considered. At a larger scale, CR brings inside equipments a smartness that can be exploited at every level of the equipment to make it more efficient. CR system may manage its power resources, anticipate its environment changes, make networks vertical handover, and so forth.

Cognitive networks (CNs) aim at improving system capacity thanks to CR devices providing enhanced spectrum sharing capabilities and a better quality of service and performance.

After 10 years of cognitive radio, this special issue aims at putting together an overview of the major achievements and developments in this field and showing the most promising challenges that remain in CR. In line with such objectives, potential topics include, but are not limited to:

Spectrum sensing technologies
Dynamic spectrum access
Distributed algorithms for spectrum detection and cooperative spectrum sensing
Information theory and performance limits of DSA
Cross-layer algorithms based on spectrum sensing techniques
Advanced signal processing techniques for CR
Cognitive radio networks
Information theory and performance limits of CN
Decision making (game theory and reinforcement learning)
Software defined radio (SDR) and CR management
Cognitive radio applications
Regulatory policies on spectrum sharing for future broadband networks
Standardization on CR systems or networks
Security issues for CR
Physical-layer design of software radio and cognitive radio transceivers
Enabling SDR technology for cognitive radio
Context aware equipments
Biologically inspired techniques for CR
Cognitive radio prototypes and test beds
Green cognitive radio
Policy languages for CR
Opportunistic and spontaneous communications
