Call For Papers

More than physical assaults, violence can take the form of dilapidated neighborhoods, gentrification efforts, economic strangleholds, caste like education systems and other institutionally based inequalities which inspire human waste and covert suicides.

To this end, Violence Against Black and Brown Bodies seeks submissions that document these assaults. Taken together, we seek to put forth a theory of violence and draft solutions for healing and justice.
Chapters can be historically based, current event inspired and from various disciplines and methodological approaches. While we encourage submissions that address one of the following themes, we also welcome other topics –so long as the concept of violence is analyzed
.
1. This Dirt: Environmental Racism as an Assault on Black and Brown Bodies
2. Human Waste and Other Types of Covert Suicides
3. Resource Drain: Unemployment, Underemployment and Spatial Mismatch
4. Our Hands Are Up: Responses to Stereotypes of the Black or Brown Criminal
5. Just Enough to Fail: Racism in the Era of Colorblindness
6. We Have the Right: U.S. Based Activism for Equity
7. Political Violence: Using Politics to Re-enforce Racial Caste Lines
8. Media Portrayals of Damaging Stereotypes

Please submit your chapter abstract, C.V. and questions to Dr. Sandra E. Weissinger (sweissi@siue.edu) by January 5th, 2015. Please make sure that all abstracts and vitas are attached as either word or PDF documents.

Initial abstracts will be reviewed by Sandra E. Weissinger (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville), Dwayne A. Mack (Berea College), and Elwood D. Watson (East Tennessee State University).

Those selected will be notified by March 2015 and asked to submit a full chapter draft by May 2015.
