Workshop Aim
The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss current state of Software Engineering (SE) research and Industrial Practices (IPs), and advance collaboration to reduce gap between research and practice. Research is core part of modern business which can lead to innovation in the form of new products and improvements in existing products and services. Most companies involved in IT solutions and services are facing challenges to incorporate research output into practices. Therefore, the challenges are to identify the gaps and to discover ways in collaboration to use SE research for the benefit of IPs.

Different perceptions and expectations are obstacles in collaboration between SE researchers and practitioners. Researchers have a view that practitioners are reluctant to share real industry data due to confidentiality agreements. Practitioners believe that researchers are mostly working on some dated or futuristic theoretical challenges which are very far from IPs. Researchers believe that practitioners are looking for quick fixes to their problems instead of using systematic methods or going for research. Practitioners have a view that case studies in research do not represent complexities of real projects and have doubt on the results produced by research. Researchers expect good problems with real industry data and few years from practitioners to generate good publications which may affect a specific domain in a limited way. Practitioners expect a quick generalised solution which must earn substantial profit immediately. Researchers and practitioners need to overlap research and practice to build trust in their partnership. The workshop is a platform to discuss and address such challenges.

Topics/Scope
The workshop will have paper presentations, seminars and round table discussions. Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit papers and position statements on topics related to the workshop. These topics include, but are not limited to:
• Success stories of SE research-practice partnership
• Best practices of SE research-practice partnership
• Challenges in SE research-practice partnership
• Business models for SE research-practice partnership
• What are common mistakes and pitfalls in SE research-practice partnership?
• Case studies and experience reports
• What research wants from industry?
• What industry wants from research?
• Practical challenges having potential for research
• Existing research and systematic methods which are beneficial but ignored by the industry
• Industry issues, needs, demands in which SE research can participate
• Issues, needs and demands of SE research in which Industry can participate
• Challenges, issues, bottlenecks and gaps in adoption of research
• Collaborations between researchers and practitioners

Submissions
SER&IPs 2014 is soliciting regular and short papers, and position statements for seminars. Regular papers should not exceed 8 pages, short papers 4 pages and position statements for seminars should not exceed 2 pages. Papers and position statements should conform to the ICSE submission format and guidelines available at http://2014.icse-conferences.org/format. Please submit the papers and statements in PDF format at EasyChair, https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=serips2014.

Papers should be original and unpublished material describing innovative and mature research results, experience reports, case studies, challenges, problems and solutions, ongoing work, new ideas, new results and future trends. All submissions will be reviewed by three program committee members. The program committee will review all papers for novelty, quality, relevance, and their potential to trigger discussions at the workshop. Seminars will be selected based on the submitted two page position statements. The selection of seminars will be made to ensure a good mix of views, opinions, experiences and potential to trigger discussions rather than any novelty and quality measures of the statements.

The accepted workshop papers, both regular and short, will be published in the ICSE companion proceedings, ACM Digital Library, IEEE Digital Libraries, and on the workshop web site. Authors of accepted papers will require to register and present the paper at the workshop in order for the paper to be included in the proceedings and in ACM and IEEE Digital Libraries. The accepted position statements will be published on the workshop web site. Authors of accepted position statements will require to register and present the seminar at the workshop in order for the position statement to be published on the workshop web site.

After the workshop, the authors of selected best papers will be invited to submit a revised and extended version of their papers for consideration of publication as a special issue in a journal, which will subject to another round of refereeing.
