IET COMMUNICATIONS Special Issue on

Cooperative Wireless and Mobile Communications

CALL FOR PAPERS

The fundamental idea of cooperative communications in wireless networks originates from the design of multiple antenna systems. In multiple antenna systems, communicating terminals are equipped with multiple antennas to mitigate the effects of multipath fading and optimize the communication rate in the network. Wireless communication nodes like cellular phones and sensor nodes have size restrictions, power supply limitations, and are only able to accommodate a limited level of complexity. It is thus unfeasible to equip them with multiple antennas. The effects of multi-path fading are critical in cellular, Adhoc and sensor networks because the physical deployment of communicating nodes makes them susceptible to interference. It is thus imperative to adopt a mechanism to combat fading in such networks. The broadcast nature of the wireless medium makes it easy for communicating nodes to hear each other, thus they can share their physical resources specifically their single antennas, thereby creating a virtual multiple-antenna array. Cooperative communications is a concept that enables several single-antenna nodes to cooperate and form a distributed multiple-antenna system which combats multipath fading. In recent years, cooperative communications has received extensive world-wide attention and significant advances in both research and applications have been achieved.
The aim of this special issue is to publish research papers reflecting the most recent research and application results in cooperative wireless and mobile communications and networks, with emphasis on the physical layer challenges of virtual and distributed MIMO. The following topical areas will be covered in this special issue:

Distributed space-time coding and spatial multiplexing schemes
Channel estimation and non-coherent signal detection in cooperative networks
Multi-user detection and interference cancellation in cooperative networks
Diversity coding schemes (space/time/frequency) in cooperative broadband networks
Resource allocation and planning in cooperative MIMO-OFDM systems
Energy-efficient user/node/relay selection strategies in cooperative networks
Cooperative relay transmission protocols: decode and forward, amplify and forward, etc
Cooperative multiuser and multi-cell techniques in cellular networks
Power allocation strategies in cooperative networks
Low complexity detection, data gathering, and coding in large scale cooperative networks
Cooperative techniques for cognitive radio and spectrum utilization in cooperative networks
Cooperative techniques for green radio communications
Cooperative technologies for WiMax/M-WiMax and LTE/LTE-A

Prospective authors should follow the Guide to Authors of Papers for IET journals, which can be accessed at http://scitation.aip.org/IET-COM.
