This special section on image and video analysis, detection, and recognition will address recent findings in theory, methodologies, and applications in image/video analysis and pattern. Its main goal is to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art in image/video analysis, and to promote further applications in a range of fields including medical imaging, digital photography, multimedia, cultural heritage, and surveillance.

This is an open call for papers, soliciting original contributions in addition to selected works from the 2017 International Conference on Image Analysis and Processing (ICIAP 2017), a well-established conference series organized biennially by the Italian Member Society (GIRPR) of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR).

Manuscripts should conform to the author guidelines of the Journal of Electronic Imaging. Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their manuscript through the online submission system at https://jei.msubmit.net. The special section should be mentioned in the cover letter. Each manuscript will be reviewed by at least two independent reviewers. Peer review will commence immediately upon manuscript submission, with a goal of making a first decision within 6 weeks. Special sections are opened online once a minimum of four papers have been accepted. Each paper is published as soon as the copyedited and typeset proofs are approved by the author.
