Special Session on Energy-efficient Image Processing Techniques for Wireless Sensor Networks (EIPT-WSN'13)

Under the framework of the International Conference of Signal Processing, Image Processing and Pattern Recognition (ICSIPR'13)
will be held on February 7-8, 2013 in Tamil Nadu, India.

= General Information =
========================
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have many applications ranging from environmental monitoring, security management, and medical applications to smart homes. That’s because WSN has become a new paradigm in information gathering technique where each node equipped with devices used to monitor and collect the data, process the collected data, and then transmit the data to its adjacent neighbour nodes. The recent availability of inexpensive hardware such as CMOS and charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras has enabled the new research field of image-based wireless sensor networks. The camera has the ability to capture still image from the environment. However, transferring raw data of large size (e.g., image data) requires a huge bandwidth and high processing capabilities. As a result it causes rapid depletion of on-board power, increases congestion in the routing channels of the WSN and enforces the early death of wireless sensor nodes. The main issue in these image-based wireless sensor applications is how to carry out their computation intensive tasks while efficiently use the sensor nodes’ on-board depletable energy.
This special session emphasizes the usage of image processing techniques such as compression and transformation, filtering, lossless coding and quantization in order to improve the performance of image-based wireless sensor networks. The aim of this session is to attract researchers and practitioners from academia and industry in order to provide a discussion environment for sharing their experiences of using advanced image processing techniques for addressing the challenges in the area of image-based and visual wireless sensor networks.
