Workshop Goal
The workshop is focused on measurement uncertainty definition and estimation methods. It is organized in order to:

1. promote the exchange of ideas between researchers from universities, metrological institutes, and companies that are particularly concerned with measurement uncertainty issues.
2. promote the discussion about advantages and limitations of the most recent approaches to uncertainty expression and estimation;
3. identify problems that arise when dealing with the most advanced measuring systems and effective solutions to the various situations in which a measurement result should be used;
4. provide information about new approaches and methods for the evaluation of uncertainty in measurement.

Background
The correct expression and estimation of uncertainty in measurement is one of the most challenging tasks that scientists and practitioners have to face every time a new measurement is performed. The reference standard for expressing and estimating uncertainty in measurement is the IEC-ISO Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM), which defines the uncertainty concept in an universally accepted way. The GUM and its supplements also provide very useful recommendations on how to express and estimate uncertainty. The fast, recent evolution of measuring instruments, which are more and more based on complex digital signal processing and on interconnected, distributed systems, represents a quite severe test bench for the application of these recommendations, thus highlighting the theoretical and practical limitations of the GUM. In the last years, several interesting approaches have been proposed in order to find different solutions to these problems, and new, advanced mathematical theories have been investigated in order to find a more general framework to handle the quantity of information provided by a measurement.

Workshop Topics
The Workshop main topics deal with how uncertainty in measurement can be defined, expressed, estimated and propagated. This includes but is not limited to: uncertainty epistemology, uncertainty definition, mathematical methods for the expression of limited knowledge, statistics, theory of probability, theory of possibility and fuzzy variables, theory of evidence, uncertainty estimation, uncertainty propagation, uncertainty estimation in complex measuring systems, uncertainty estimation in distributed systems. The application of new, advanced methods for uncertainty estimation to practical cases in the measurement of electrical, mechanical, thermal and other physical quantities are also included in the Workshop topics. Both theoretical and experimental papers on the above topics are solicited.

Expected Audience
We expect several communities from around the world to contribute to the workshop:

* Researchers and practitioners from Industry who are concerned with problems related to uncertainty in measurement;
* Researchers from Universities who are actively involved in measurement and instrumentation research;
* Researchers from Metrological Institutes;
* Members of Technical Committees of Standard Organizations actively involved in the production or revision of Standard documents.
