Computational Intelligence, which is considered as a sub-branch of Artificial Intelligence,
studies, mostly nature inspired, adaptive mechanisms in order to enable or facilitate intelligent
behavior in complex and changing environments. These mechanisms include those Artificial
Intelligence paradigms that exhibit an ability to learn or adapt to new situations, to generalize,
abstract, discover and associate. Usually the following paradigms are considered as part of
Computational Intelligence: artificial neural networks, evolutionary computation, swarm
intelligence, artificial immune systems, and fuzzy systems. Individual techniques from these
Computational Intelligence paradigms, as well as hybrids of these paradigms, have been
applied successfully to solve real-world problems from the fields of applied biology,
bioinformatics and computational biology.

Aim of the Workshop

The aim of this workshop is to serve as an interdisciplinary forum for bringing together specialists
which use Computational Intelligence techniques to deal with real-world problems in theoretical
and applied biology, bioinformatics, computational biology, chemical informatics, bioengineering
and related fields. Issues related to the theory of Computational Intelligence techniques, as well
as real-life applications in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology will be addressed to this workshop.

Topics of Interest

The Workshop on "Computational Intelligence Applications in Bioinformatics" welcomes paper
submissions introducing and implementing Computational Intelligent techniques to address various
applications in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. This workshop will provide a medium for
the exchange of ideas between theoreticians and practitioners to address the important issues in
computational intelligence for modeling and prediction.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Systems Biology
Molecular Sequence Alignment and Analysis
RNA and protein folding and structure prediction
Protein-Protein interactions
Biological Networks
Biological Processes
Biological and Medical Ontologies
Computational Proteomics
In-silico Optimization of Biological Systems
High-Throughput Data Analysis (microarrays, mass spectrometry, EST, NGS etc.)
Analysis of Large Biological Data Sets
Medical Image Analysis and Pattern Recognition

Call for Papers

Authors will be invited to submit electronically, in English-language, original and significant research
contributions in the aforementioned areas. All submissions will be reviewed for quality, correctness,
originality, and relevance by at least two reviewers. Notification and reviews will be communicated
via email.
Manuscripts should be prepared according to the well known LNCS Springer style, the standard
format of regular papers, and should be restricted to a maximum of 10 pages. Detailed instructions
for preparing the manuscript are provided at: http://delab.csd.auth.gr/eann2011/Submission.html.
Accepted papers will be presented at the workshop and included in a CD that will be distributed to
the participants of the workshop. Furthermore it will be investigated the possibility of publishing the
presented research papers in an edited book, issued by some international publisher.

The authors should send their submissions in pdf format to: sfg@teikal.gr

Workshop Proceedings

The workshop proceedings will be included in CD and distributed separately from the main
conference to the workshops participants. The authors will be responsible for producing
camera-ready copies of papers, conforming to the well known LNCS Springer style formatting
guidelines, for inclusion in the proceedings. Note that at least one author of each accepted
paper is required to register and attend the workshop in order to present the paper.
