The Journal of Economic Diplomacy invites scholars, policymakers, and practitioners to contribute to a special issue titled "The US Trade Statecraft and Trump's Global Trade War." This special issue aims to explore the theoretical, empirical, and policy dimensions of US trade statecraft, particularly during the Trump administration, analyzing its strategic objectives, diplomatic impacts, and broader implications for global trade.
Background: Trade statecraft refers to the integration and utilization of trade policies and practices within a broader framework of a nation's foreign policy and diplomatic efforts. It involves economic measures, including trade policies and agreements, utilized by states to achieve broader geopolitical and strategic objectives. Under the Trump administration, the United States notably shifted toward a more aggressive form of trade statecraft, characterized by tariff wars, renegotiations of trade agreements, and strategic economic interventions aimed at achieving political and geopolitical objectives. This special issue seeks to understand these developments, their motivations, and the outcomes for international economic relations. Scope and Themes: We invite submissions on various aspects of trade statecraft, with an emphasis on the US approach during the Trump era. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to: 1. Conceptualizing Trade Statecraft: Trade statecraft theories and definitions based on their integration within foreign policy. Historical evolution and contemporary relevance of trade statecraft. 2. US-China Trade War: Analysis of US strategic objectives, tariff escalation, export controls, and implications of the US-China trade conflict. Impact on global trade governance and multilateral trade systems. 3. Strategic Trade Agreements: Negotiation and impact of the USMCA and other bilateral or multilateral agreements under Trump. Influence on international trade norms and economic diplomacy. 4. Political Economy and Geopolitics: Intersection of US trade policies with geopolitical objectives, particularly in relation to major economies such as China, the EU, and others. Effects on international alliances and global supply chains. 5. Economic Sanctions and Export Controls: Analysis of export controls, tariffs, and sanctions as strategic diplomatic tools. Assessment of effectiveness and consequences on targeted economies. Submission Guidelines: • Abstract Submission: Submit abstracts (300-500 words) clearly outlining research questions, methodologies, and anticipated findings by June 15, 2025. • Announcement of Acceptance: Accepted abstracts will be notified by July 15, 2025. • Full Paper Submission: Submit full papers by September 15, 2024, adhering to the journal’s guidelines available on our website.
