This edited volume explores the interrelations between disability and addiction within Japanese literary literature. By focusing strictly on literary representations—and excluding media studies—this collection aims to examine how embodiment, social normativity, and deviance are negotiated through culturally specific frameworks.
The editors invite contributions for the following four sections 1. Disability in Japanese Literature (3 Articles) Representations of disability in premodern, modern, or contemporary Japanese literary texts. Analysis of the body as a site of control, breakdown, or marginalization within Japanese social frameworks. Note: Focus is strictly on literary narratives; no media studies. 2. Addiction in Japanese Literature (3 Articles) Literary narrativization of addiction to substances (alcohol, drugs), behaviors (gambling), or affective states. Analysis of postwar and contemporary fiction (e.g., works by Osamu Dazai, Yukio Mishima, Ryū Murakami, or Sayaka Murata). Note: Focus is strictly on literary narratives; no media studies. Theoretical Framework & Submission Guidelines We particularly encourage contributions that engage with Disability Studies (e.g., Rosemarie Garland-Thomson, Lennard J. Davis, Susanne Hartwig) and critical addiction studies. Article Length: 5,000–9,000 words. Citation Style: APA (6th edition), in-text citations only. Languages: English or German. Submission Requirements: Please provide an abstract (300–500 words) and a short bio (100 words). Timeline (Provisional) Abstract submission: 30.06.2026. Notification of acceptance: 30.07.2026.
