Call For Papers

More than half of the world’s population is living in cities. These require extended infrastructure and various services to support the densely concentrated population, ranging from electric grid, private and public transportation, water supply and sewage sanitation, telecommunication, health care, banking, education, childcare, nursing homes, welfare, law enforcement, and governmental operations. These services generate an enormous amount of data; when these data are collected and analysed using the latest computer and information technologies, the resultant ‘smart cities’ run more efficiently, costing fewer resources, have increased connectivity and security, and are more environmentally friendly.
There is a long list of enabling technologies that can be implemented to facilitate smart cities. To name just a few, there are Internet of Things (IoT) and sensing technologies, new generations of telecommunication technology such as 5G, cyber-physical systems, cloud and service-orientated computing, smart grid, intelligent transportation systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, autonomous driving, machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer vision, and blockchain technology. One particular valuable opportunity in smart city research is the integration of multiple enabling technologies, which is an emerging field..

By using these enabling technologies, a wide variety of smart city applications maybe developed. We have already seen smart city consortiums and hubs being created that focus on the cultivation and sharing of innovative applications, for example, the Smart Cities Connect Media and Research group.

We envisage that many new interesting scientific and engineering problems will arise when integrating multiple enabling technologies together for data collection in smart cities. On the other hand, designing smart city applications would also expose areas in the individual enabling technologies that could be improved. In this Special Issue, we encourage researchers to submit their research into data collection methods, specifically relating to smart cities in smart city research.

Full submissions of accepted abstracts should be completed by December 9th, 2022. Authors that require more time should contact communities@peerj.com to request an extension.
