FACTS:
According to consumer research, wireless power charging ranks within the top 20% of consumer lifestyle concerns due to the inconvenience of power cords. Just as the cellular phone has dramatically changed how we communicate, wireless power transfer technology will revolutionize how power is delivered seamlessly to devices wherever they are and whenever they are needed. Whether it is for an electric vehicle or a lawn mower, wireless power transfer will open an avalanche of technology and product innovation and new business opportunities to the world.

REQUIREMENTS:
Communication between the wireless devices and the power source is required for wireless power to be transferred safely among devices in a timely fashion. The requirements for this communication include:

* High reliability and security
* Low latency
* The ability to communicate under conditions of high interference from the extremely high power that is flowing in parallel with the communication data.
* Be flexible
* Sufficient bandwidth such that both control and data information can be transferred to and from the devices at the speed required. (For example, power may flow not only one way from the power generation and transmission infrastructure to the devices, but also may flow from the devices to the infrastructure).
* The communications systems must support these bidirectional power and communications flows.
* The communications must also be reliable in the electrically noisy environment in proximity to the power system.

OBJECTIVES:
To meet the challenges of ubiquitous wires power control and communications, many ground-breaking new technologies are required. The objective of this First International Workshop (FIW) on Communications in Wireless Power Transfer is:

* Bring together academia, industry and government.
* Exchange novel ideas.
* Explore and identify enabling technologies.
* Discuss the latest innovative designs and challenges.
* Share experimental results.
* Influence future research and business direction for communications systems and wireless power transfer.
