Special issue of Int. J. Artificial Intelligence (IJAI) on Metaheuristics in Artificial Intelligence

Nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithms are emerging as powerful and promising techniques in optimization, classifications and artificial intelligence. Broadly speaking, neural networks and support vector machines are metaheuristic algorithms, though they are traditionally belong to specialized subjects. However, as these algorithms require training and the values of parameters need to be learned, they can be considered as heuristic. It is no exaggeration to say the artificial intelligence is heuristic, as computational intelligence at the moment is largely by trial and error.

Optimization is an intelligent process if true optimal solutions to highly nonlinear, complex optimization need to be found in a reasonably time scale. Most real-world problems are NP-hard, and thus no efficient algorithm exist at the moment. Many applications can be considered as an optimization process to reduce errors and improve prediction accuracy in their own (but often different) context. Good examples are machine learning, data mining, and business intelligence.

This special issue invites contributions and reviews of the latest developments in metaheuristics and their applications in artificial intelligence. Topics include (but they are not limited to)

• Nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithms (e.g., ant and bee algorithms, cuckoo search, genetic algorithms, firefly algorithm, particle swarm optimization)
• Global optimization and case studies using metaheuristics
• Neural networks and support vector machine (e.g., regression, classification, pattern recognition)
• Business intelligence, optimization and management
• Data mining techniques and applications
